What is an Invalid Transponder alert?

An Invalid Transponder alert is thrown when one of your assets receives a license plate toll because the asset does not have a valid toll tag/transponder assigned in tollogic™.

Toll Collection Context

Toll agencies collect tolls by reading the toll transponder installed in an asset. If the transponder does not read, for any reason, the agency will capture an image of the asset’s license plate, find the asset in a state or proprietary database, and issue an invoice for the toll. This toll invoice, known as a license plate toll (LPT), may appear on your regular electronic toll invoice or mailed as a physical letter.

Because LPTs take more time and resources to issue, they are typically 25% more expensive than transponder tolls. Regional premiums vary for LPTs.

If a transponder or license plate needs to be moved or removed, please update all relevant details within tollogic™ and your toll manager.

Tolling Interoperability Context

InteroperabilityMap

The four interoperable regions within the United States are in the northeast, southeast, and central states. Within every region, there are multiple toll agencies each managing their own roads and issuing their own toll transponders. Toll transponders within a region of interoperability, however, can be used with any of the different toll roads within the same region.

This also means a toll transponder issued by an agency in the Central region will not work on a toll road in the Northeastern region. As such, a toll transponder issued by an agency in Texas will not work on New York toll roads, but the transponder will work on Oklahoma toll roads.

To prevent LPTs, please ensure each of your assets that are tolling has a valid toll transponder for every region they are tolling in. If your assets are tolling in multiple regions, they may need more than one toll device installed.

Invalid Transponder Alert

When an asset incurs a license plate toll (LPT), tollogic™ will attempt to match the license plate on the toll to a license plate in our database. An Invalid Transponder alert will be triggered if tollogic™ finds a matching license plate, but the asset associated does not have a valid toll tag/transponder for the facility where the LPT occurred.

The toll transponder may not be valid as it does not operate within the relevant toll interoperability region, or the transponder has not been issued by the relevant toll agency.

Next Action

If you expect the asset that triggered this alert to continue tolling in this region, please register and install a valid toll transponder inside the asset, then update the asset’s transponder details in tollogic™. A toll transponder must be registered with the toll authority responsible for issuing the LPT.

Note: You may have more than one toll transponder assigned to an asset at a time.
